La Retraite Jersey Dental Care
Children's Dental Care
We believe that excellent preventative dental care can, and should start from an early age. Regular check-ups and advice, as soon as your child’s first teeth appear from around the age of six months, will guard against dental decay, which can result in severe pain, time off school and infection risk if left untreated. See more here.
Best practice and advice changes quickly in the field of dentistry. In line with evidence based research and current guidelines, we focus on prevention and early detection of potential problems.
Our experienced team has a gentle approach to help your child build confidence in their dental visits and achieve independence in maintaining their oral health.
The Four Pillars of Prevention
A concept known as the “four pillars of prevention” will help maintain your child’s teeth in the best possible condition. They are:
01
An appropriate diet
including reduced quantity and frequency of sugars
02
Good oral hygiene
including good tooth brushing techniques
03
Fluoride delivery
including choosing the right toothpaste and professional fluoride varnish application
04
Sealant restorations
in certain teeth these can protect areas that toothbrush bristles can’t reach
We can help you achieve the right balance here and there are many great resources that can further support you with your child’s dental health. The British Society of Paediatric dentistry has guidance for parents and child friendly interactive videos, please see here. Please ask us if you have any questions.
Fluoride varnish is one of the best options for increasing the availability of topical fluoride regardless of the levels of fluoride in any water supply. This should happen when a child visits a dental surgery and is strongly recommended. The dental caries-preventive effectiveness of fluoride varnish in both permanent and primary dentitions is clear.

Additional Children's Treatments
Interceptive Orthodontics
Regular examination of your child’s developing dentition allows any problems with the way their teeth meet to be detected at an early stage. This will enable timely referral for orthodontic assessment and treatment if required. The window of opportunity for simple and effective treatment of certain conditions is often limited and prompt action can avoid lengthy and complicated treatments when they are older.
Mouth Guards for Sport
Injuries can occur in many types of sport. There are several types of mouth guards available, a custom made mouth guard will provide increased protection and can be one of the best investments for your child’s long term dental safety.
